Desmond

Tonight’s episode is going to be about Desmond. We know this from the bagpipes in the preview and can surmise it from the fact that Desmond arrived on the island as the “package” last episode.

I thought, first of all, that Desmond was going to be an important chess piece in a game that Charles Widmore was about to play with Jacob’s Nemesis. Remember, to leave the island the Man-in-Black needs all of Jacob’s candidates to go with him. Or, possibly, he needs them dead. Desmond is a candidate. But, there’s more to it than this, I think.

Remember, Desmond recognized Jack on the flash-sideways Oceanic flight. That means that Desmond has some kind of memory of knowing Jack previously. That means that perhaps Desmond is aware of the real timeline going on simultaneously. Why? Because Desmond has had flashes like this before and perhaps he’ll recognize this flash-sideways for what it is.

The previews for this week’s episode have talked about a “path” being found. Putting two and two together, in an episode about Desmond perhaps the path that’s found is a result of Desmond doing, or remembering, or realizing something. If he figures out what the flash-sideways is all about and if he somehow figures out how to right it all, then there’s our path. Poof.

The writers did say that sometime, about half-way through this season, the two timelines would merge about become one. Could we perhaps see that tonight? And does Desmond have something to do with it. I think quite possibly, yes.

Not only is Desmond important to Widmore as a bargaining piece, and something to prevent the Smoke Monster from leaving the island, but perhaps Widmore also knows what’s going on with the two timelines and needs Desmond to make things right. Then again, perhaps I’m completely off-base, but that’s half the fun of LOST: making these wild predictions.

The path, of course, could be something entirely different but at this point in the season, given what we know about the two timelines merging, I’d venture that this is what we’re up for.

Richard

Tonight’s episode of LOST is about Richard, one of the great mysteries of the island. Ironically, it feels like it’s been ages since we first met Richard. Back then we didn’t really understand much about him. He was an advisor to Ben, the leader of the Others, and seemed to wield significant power in his own right, but we didn’t know much more than that. Since then, we’ve learned a lot.

John Locke

Whew, what a ride. According to the preview trailer for episode 4, called “The Substitute,” this episode will focus heavily on Jacob’s nemesis, as John Locke, on the island.

From the look of things, it’s going to be a very good episode. We see John and Sawyer, never the best of friends, interacting in the jungle; Sawyer with a gun pointed at John’s back, at one point. We see Richard, in the jungle, warning the Survivors that John wants to kill all of them, every last one. It looks like high stakes, and it looks like they’re focusing on what I had hoped they would last week: John and Richard.

Ever since Fake John dragged Richard into the jungle after killing Jacob and Ilana’s men I’ve been wondering what’s up, and waiting to find out. It looks like we’ll finally know.

First of all, it looks like Jacob’s nemesis either doesn’t have a chance to kill Richard, or decides not to, because Richard gets away long enough to warn the Survivors of the nemesis’ evil plan (which apparently is to kill everyone). How Richard gets away, or why he’s let go is still a subject of mystery, as is Jacob’s nemesis’ rationale for killing all of the Survivors. What exactly is his game? I have a thesis going that the entire premise of the show has been Jacob’s nemesis trying to have him killed, but why, after Jacob is dead, would he need all the other residents of the island killed? I have no idea. Obviously that’s his plan, because as soon as Jacob was killed, the Others at the temple began their fortification, but exactly what vendetta the nemesis has to settled, we don’t know.

I’m very interested in seeing how the whole Sawyer/John thing plays out. Remember, Sawyer doesn’t know that John isn’t actually John but he seems to figure it out, judging by the promo trailer. I’m frustrated by Sawyer, post-Juliet’s dead, and I hope a confrontation with John will shake him back into character. I understand he’s upset and brooding over Juliet, but all the tired mopping around and angst—I want to see the strong, tough, and tender-hearted Sawyer again! I want to see him kick John’s ass, too.

While last week’s episode was good, I really hope this episode moves the plot along a lot more, and answers any of the burning questions we’ve had for years. It looks like it might, so here’s hoping.

Sayid

Some thoughts on tonight’s upcoming episode of LOST.

At the end of last week’s premiere episode, Sayid, who had been brought to the healing spring at the Others’ temple suddenly woke up. I assumed when we saw that, that Sayid was healed, and that even though it didn’t work right away, somehow the spring ended up working and healing him, like it did for Ben back in the 1970’s. But what if Sayid wasn’t healed. What if Jacob possesses the same ability as his Nemesis—what if Jacob can inhabit dead bodies? What if Sayid is Jacob reincarnate? Will it be revealed right away? Probably not. If I were Jacob, and I’d just been killed by my nemesis, I think I’d want to lay low before revealing my cover. How are we to even know? We couldn’t tell that John Locke wasn’t himself until they showed it to us, right? I wonder how long Jacob could go on living as Sayid, undercover, until we’d find out.

I also wonder what happened to Claire. Surely it’ll be revealed in time, but considering that Jacob’s nemesis was posing as Jack’s dad, and lured Claire away from the survivors and away from her baby, I wonder what’s become of her. Jacob’s nemesis must’ve had some sinister plan, some larger plan, apart from just separating her from her baby. Although, perhaps that was what it took to get Kate to leave, and then come back from the island. If you put all the pieces together, I’m fairly confident that Jacob’s nemesis has been orchestrating things for a long, long time. I’m willing to suspect that perhaps the entire show has been about Jacob’s nemesis working to kill Jacob. Perhaps.

Maria and I will be watching LOST tonight, at 9EST. We’ll be twittering it again, like last week, and it was a lot of fun, so join us if you can. I’ll be blogging my complete thoughts on Wednesday. So, losties, stay tuned.
