On April 1st of this year I pulled off a wonderful prank which fooled the large majority of my readership, and brought tons of readers I didn’t even know I had out of the woodwork. For the whole month, it’s been the most-read article. It hasn’t been the first time I’ve pulled a prank online. Back in first year of this little site I wrote about how I’d decided to quit school—I was at the University of Waterloo at the time—and join the Army. I had already signed up and was shipping out for Basic Training shortly. That prank, too, caused a spike of interest in my site, followed by a firestorm of criticism, some support, and lots and lots of people pleading with me to change my mind.

I love me a good prank.

And so, since there’s unfortunately no May Fool’s Day I thought I would dig up a couple of pranks from around the web. The first one is actually a failed prank, but it’s still hilarious. The reaction of the guy being interviewed is priceless.

The next clip is from a Japanese game show, of course. The man is led to believe he’s at a job interview—which goes terribly wrong when he finds himself under sniper fire.

The next two are from Just for Laughs Gags, a Canadian show that pulls off some of the best pranks ever. The second of these two videos is quite possibly the best prank, ever.

My brother-in-law Mark introduced this video at a family get-together this weekend. It had us in absolute stitches; I had to share.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox

Alright, so for the sake of full disclosure Wes Anderson is probably my favourite writer/director working in Hollywood today. The others, because I know you were wondering, are M. Night Shyamalan and the Coen Brothers. That said, I’m reviewing The Fantastic Mr. Fox from a particular perspective, whether that’s a good or bad thing from Mr. Anderson in the end, you’ll have to read and find out.

An Education

Truly, An Education wasn’t what I expected it would be going in.

To be fair, it was probably my fault. Concerned about sexual content, I looked it up on some family-oriented movie review sites. The kind of sites that warn parents about inappropriate material in films, and tell you which to stay far away from.

This particular website described An Education as pretty terrible. In not so many words, it said that the film was about a young girl being seduced by an older man who wanted to have sex with her. It said that the majority of the film surrounded this attempt, by the older man, to get the younger girl to have intercourse with him. It said that that was essentially the point of the film. I had my own reservations as well. Having recently seen Crazy Heart, I was still smarting from the classic Hollywood older man is swooned by much younger woman fantasy that that film let play out. An Education seemed like it would be much the same. But, as I’d find out, it wasn’t all about sex and it wasn’t just that same old Hollywood story.

Up in the Air

My wife, Maria, described Up in the Air as a very well put-together movie. That about sums it up. And she’s totally right, of course.

Up in the Air is essentially a film about a traveling salesman. Ryan Bingham, played expertly by George Clooney, is a businessman who’s job it is to travel around the world firing people. He’s hired to fire, and he makes a living doing it. In fact, he loves doing it. Bingham loves the experience of flying, staying in hotels, eating out, and wracking up air miles. It’s his passion; living alone, isolated, is his credo. His philosophy. It’s interesting, seeing someone living their life like that. It is. Up in the Air is a movie about Ryan Bingham, and it’s very well done.

Up

I’ll make this short and sweet. I think, perhaps, I’m just a grump but I didn’t love the new venture from Disney/Pixar, Up. To boil it down to basics, it’s a great film, a great family film and an incredible accomplishment for Disney/Pixar and animated films in general. It’s definitely the best family film I’ve seen in a long time but it’s still a family film, not too complex or complicated, nothing incredibly deep, but clean, simple and thoughtful fun. If that’s what you’re interested in, then this film’s for you.

A Serious Man

Commercials and advertisements for this year’s Academy Awards are billing it as historic. Ten nominations for best picture, they say, because 2009 was such an incredible year for film. It’ll go down in the record books, they say. Monumental. I call shenanigans.

Like District Nine, the latest venture from the brothers Coen, A Serious Man, does not belong on the list of this year’s best films.
